HFC Refrigerant Phase-Out & Alternative
Refrigerant Solutions

Modern Ice Equipment & Supply

HFC refrigerants are experiencing their final phase-out in a variety of markets across the globe due to their high global warming potential (GWP).

Refrigerant Phase Outs

HFO refrigerants, of Hydrofluro-Olefins, are a new class of refrigerants that have a reduced global warming potential versus HFC refrigerants. The goal of the HFOs are to provide an alternative refrigerant that is safe, non-Ozone depleting, and with a relatively low Global Warming Potential. Regulation, both national and international, has been one of the most important drivers for the investment in new technology.

Modern Ice offers Vogt ice makers that are designed to run on an HFO blend (R513A) which should have the ability to evolve to pure HFO solutions for the future retrofitting. We also offer Vogt ice makers that utilize Ammonia refrigerant. Both of these options are expected to be long-term solutions under environmental regulations.

R404a and R22 are both HFC refrigerants that are being phased out. Due to these environmental regulations and restrictions, the supply of each of these refrigerants has been reduced significantly and the cost is increasing accordingly. These are important factors to take into consideration as you plan for the future of your ice business.
