What is Tube Ice?
Tube Ice is a type of ice produced by certain Vogt Ice machines. It’s a cylindrical, hollow ice shape – essentially a small tube of frozen water. This allows faster cooling compared with a solid piece of the same outer size
On a Vogt tube ice machine, water is typically frozen on the outside of vertical ice-forming tubes. Refrigerant flows through the tubes, cooling their surfaces enough for water to freeze around them.
Once the ice reaches the desired thickness:
- The freezing cycle ends.
- A harvest cycle introduces warmer gas/water to release the ice from the freezing surfaces.
- The cylindrical ice falls or is harvested from the machine.
- The individual tubes can then be stored, conveyed, or packaged.
How often should I do preventative maintenance checks on my Vogt ice machine?
You should perform a visual preventative maintenance check for one cycle every day. Key items to monitor include the condition of the water nozzles (to avoid unobstructed water flow and thin ice), the refrigerant levels, oil levels, and compressor operating pressures.
What causes the machine to freeze up?
A machine freeze-up typically occurs when the harvest cycle doesn’t trigger properly. Common causes include an improperly adjusted low-pressure safety switch, a defective hot gas solenoid valve, or a dirty/scratched evaporator surface.
