Cool Running: Distribution Efficiency: Part 1

Modern Ice Equipment & Supply

In preparation for the upcoming summer season, hear from one of Modern Ice’s Strategic Partners, Cool Running Software. Founder Tony Dickson describes how Cool Running & IceQ can help your ice business run effectively to improve your ice distribution efficiency!
Cool Running was founded by Tony Dickson, created and successfully used in his very own Ice Business, Olmsted Ice in Cleveland, Ohio. The experience Tony has as an Ice Man over the past 30 years allowed him to develop this software from collaboration between modern web developers and experienced icemen to create a product made for the way an Iceman likes to do business!

Reduce Trips to Delivery Locations

Example: At Olmsted Ice, trips were reduced to stops by 51% with the use of sensors

  1. During the offseason: this was done by spreading the trips out as far as possible as the weather fluctuates
    1. Tony’s offseason philosophy is “Work as hard as you can not to work.” Meaning do all you can to leave your resources at home.
  2. In the on season this is done by:
    1. Spreading the trips out
    2. Filling at the optimal time of day
      1. Example: If a stop is guaranteed to get a delivery on a weekend, don’t go when they are 75% full. Instead, the trip would be made when they are down to 25%. This efficiency is something that reduces the need for a second trip over the weekend.
    3. Deciding which stops can be pushed
      1. By reviewing sensors, it’s decided which stops can wait until the following morning
        1. This reduces the need for reloading
        2. Allows time for extra calls that come in that they are empty and need a fill
        3. Brings your team home earlier (Reduce labor time/cost)
        4. Reduces miles put on the truck by decreasing the number of times the truck has to come in and go back out
        5. helps customers rationalize their decisions if they need filled now or later
        6. Fewer trucks needed overall

Increases the Average Invoice Amount

Example: At Olmsted Ice, the invoices were increased by 48%

Reduces the Number of Trucks on the Road

Example: Carpet Bomb Ice delivery vs. The Strategic Attack

  1. In the offseason each truck sent out has a purpose to visit only the stops that need ice
  2. Example:
    1. Without Sensors: Two trucks going to their 28 stops
    2. With Sensors: Reduce to 1 truck that is doing 12 stops that actually need ice
  3. During the on season each truck sent out is hitting spots that are low and need ice
  4. Example:
    1. Without Sensors: 6 trucks all doing 15 stops each (90 stops)
      1. 5 stops did not need ice
      2. 20 stops were still at 75% full
    2. With Sensors: Reduce to 5 trucks doing 12 stops each (60 stops)
      1. All stops profitable, no non trips\
