Part 2 of 3
Modern Ice Equipment & Supply
Your Employees
You have heard this over and over because it is easiest thing to do – WASH YOUR HANDS! This is truly the best way to protect your employees, your customers, and your product from microbial contamination.
Studies have shown that convenience is key in hand washing. Consider your own facility…if you are in your bagging room, where do you wash your hands? If it is not conveniently – located, employees are much less likely to wash their hands with frequency needed. Adding Hand Washing Stations to packaging rooms and other areas where your employees are working on a regular basis can be simple. Self-contained hand washing stations are a simple, affordable option to promote proper sanitation in your plant. Options such as foot switches, motion detector, and water filtration make these a viable options for almost any ice plant.
Modern Ice consulted with Chris Dunn of DunnWorks, IPIA’s Technical Advisor and instructor for IPIA sponsored PCQI training on how packaged ice companies can protect their product and employees. For those of you who have met Chris, it won’t surprise you to hear his number-one recommendation is to promotion proper hand washing.
In addition to hand washing, limit the number of people in your production and storage areas to reduce contamination in the air and on surfaces. We will explore this more in “Part 3 – Your Plant.”
