Cool Running: Distribution Efficiency: Part 2

Modern Ice Equipment & Supply

In preparation for the upcoming summer season, hear from one of Modern Ice’s Strategic Partners, Cool Running Software. Founder Tony Dickson describes how Cool Running & IceQ can help your ice business run effectively to improve your ice distribution efficiency!
Cool Running was founded by Tony Dickson, created and successfully used in his very own Ice Business, Olmsted Ice in Cleveland, Ohio. The experience Tony has as an Ice Man over the past 30 years allowed him to develop this software from collaboration between modern web developers and experienced icemen to create a product made for the way an Iceman likes to do business!

Sensors Notice When the Box Temperature is Low or Off.

If your office knows a temperature is in the red, they can fix the problem, before it becomes a big problem.

  • Without Sensors: Customer calls when the box has been down for 24-48 hours.
  • Customer becomes irritated by box failure.
  • Maintenance shows up to repair.
  • Lost Money!
  • Driver (or maintenance man) full rotate and cleans up box.
  • Credits given to all ice in the box.
  • Lost sales while box is down.
  • Low bag weight possible/poor product
  • With Sensors: Notice that a box is in the red.
    • Call customer first and ask them:
    • “Is the door open?”
    • “Is the GFI tripped?”
    • “Is your power out?”
    • This can help figure out a solution before sending a maintenance man.
      • Reports to office how many bags (if any) need to be credited.
      • No need for full rotate and clean out.

Which Delivery Location Gets a Sensor?

  • Distant Locations:
    • Make sure the distance is worth the money getting received on the other end.
  • Tony’s Rule: The top 1/3 to 1/2 of delivery locations probably account for 75% of revenue. Tony looked to put a sensor in all those boxes.
    • “It did not matter to me if they were 1 mile away or 100 miles away.”
    • All others were on a static spread out schedule or call-in basis. 48 Hour notice and all calls on a Thursday would be delivered on Monday.
  • New Rule for Today’s Increase Distribution Cost:
    • If a location is not good enough to put a sensor.
    • Maybe don’t out a box in or ask the customer to provide the box and you can install the sensor for them.

Sensor Durability is Important!

It is easy for sensors to get bumped and beat up, so it is important they are durable.

  • Location in the Merchandiser:
    • Is the sensor in a location that delivery personnel or customers can easily “bump” into.
  • Can the sensor handle a “punch”:
    • When stuffing a merchandiser the ice bags can be crammed in. What will happen if the sensor is in that spot?
  • Magnets:
    • Powerful Magnets: If powerful enough, they will hold. IceQ has very powerful magnets for their sensors.
  • Water Tight:
    • If sensor is not water tight in connections, water will find a way in.
