Keeping your packaging equipment in top shape is always important, but it is imperative during the ice season!  Here is an outline of Hamer 540 Maintenance items Steve Croshaw (Our Freeze Force Packaging Specialist) recommends for you Hamer 540 Form, Fill, and Seal Bagger:

When performing any maintenance on equipment, follow these tips:

  • Turn off, disconnect, and / or lockout all power and air
  • Lubricate all moving parts as required and use anti-seize compound on fasteners subject to rust or corrosion
  • Be conscious of all safety related items on the machine – replace all guards and ensure that all safety decals are applied in the correct location and clearly visible.

Maintenance Procedures:

 

  • Roll Holder:
    • Check and lubricate bearings
    • Check springs, air cylinder and braking mechanism operation
    •  
  • Film Unwind System:
    • Check film rollers
    • Check dancer arm operation (springs, spring clip, air cylinder, and tension adjustments)
    • Check film clamp for positive contact – adjust if necessary
    • Check static brushes for excessive wear
  • Photo Eye – Check sensitivity adjustment, reflector, guide wear and eye mark position
  •  
  • Perforator:
    • Check silicone rubber holder for wear
    • Check knife blade for damage and sharpness
    • Adjust and align brackets and guides
    •  
  • Hole Punch:
    • Check cutter blade for damage and wear
    • Adjust accordingly
  • Date Coder (Optional):
    •           Check back-up pad for wear
    •           Check number holder for damage
    •  
  • Air Regulator:
    • Check gauge and sediment bowl
    • Check all air lines for leaks, restrictions or visible damage
    •  
  • Volumetric:
    • Check main bearings, sprockets and chain.  Adjust – Lubricate as needed
    • Check drive motor, gear box and belt. Repair or adjust as needed
    • Check slapper spring and UHMW pad for wear
    • Check wiggler pads wear
    • Check micro switch or proximity switch operation
    • Check low ice detector operation
    •  
  • Film Feed, Belt Path and Jaws:
    • Check all bearings, pulleys, sprockets, drive chain and belts on belt path
    • Realign, tension and adjust idler pulleys
    • Check jaw liners for wear and damage
    • Check jaw operating linkage and air cylinder for operation and alignment
    • Check take-up assembly for wear and damage and lubricate springs and slides
    • Check film opening tube for alignment and wear
    •  
  • Side Sealer Assembly:
    • Check Teflon cloth and silicone back-up for damage and wear and replace as necessary
    • Replace seal pad and seal pad rollers as necessary
    • Clean hot knife blade section with fine emery cloth, steel wool or wire brush
    • Disassemble knife, shield and bearing blocks – Replace worn or damaged parts as necessary
    • Check thermocouple and power wiring for connection and damage, repair or replace
    • Realign and adjust seal pad guards, Teflon back-up and knife as necessary
    •  
  • Conveyors and Lift Assembly:
    • Check conveyor belting material for wear or damage.  Replace if necessary
    • Check rollers, shafts, bearings, chains, sprockets and hardware for wear or damage
    • Clean and lubricate as needed
    •  
  • Top Sealer:
    • Check belts for damage and wear
    • Check all pulleys for wear and bearing conditions. Replace as necessary
    • Check tensioners for proper adjustment
    • Check opening and closing mechanism for ease of operation.
    • Check closed spacing adjustment
    • Lubricate slides and gears as necessary
    • Check air plenums for dirt and restrictions
    • Clean or replace as needed
    • Check drive sprocket, chain and bearings
    • Lubricate as needed
    •  
  • Control Panel:
    • Check for loose components, unsafe wiring, loose terminal connections and non-working switches or indicator lights
    • Check remote control module and umbilical cord for proper operation and unsafe wiring (if applicable)
    •
